International Tiger Day : For the Tigers

“It is not part of a true culture to tame tigers, any more than it is to make sheep ferocious.”

— Henry David Thoreau

Every year on July 29, Global Tiger Day is observed to bring attention to this majestic yet critically endangered large cat. The 13 nations that make up the tiger range came together in 2010 to establish Tx2, a global objective to double the population of wild tigers by the year 2022. The objective of this day mainly focused on spreading awareness to governments, organizations, and individuals about the conservation of tigers. 95 percent of the tiger population has decreased over the past 150 years, according to the World Wildlife Fund. Therefore, the purpose of this day is to inspire everyone to act appropriately to rescue the wild cats.

After it was discovered that only about 3,000 tigers remained and that 97 percent of them had vanished in the previous century, International Tiger Day was established in 2010. At the Saint Petersburg Tiger Summit in Russia, a number of nations struck a pact to stop the problem from getting worse because tigers were in danger of going extinct. In addition to protecting these species, the day aims to maintain and improve tiger habitats. Many international organizations, including the Smithsonian Institution, the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), and the International Fund for Animal Welfare, mark International Tiger Day. The WWF estimates that there are 3,900 wild cats left in the world today. Nearly 70% of the tigers in the world are found in India.

Much like every year, there exists a theme for International Tiger Day. The theme for International Tiger Day 2022 is yet to be announced. Last year’s theme was – “Their survival is in our hands.”

To raise awareness of the need to save tigers, people hold seminars and engage in an increasing number of conversations on this day. Additionally, they give money to organizations that support tiger conservation.

But why do we care for tigers so much?

Well, tigers are giant, magnificent cats that are loved all around the globe. They are noble and fearless creatures, respected for their courage. They tend to stay true to what they think is right on the battlefield but also show great generosity, thereby representing the ideal ethics of life. Tigers symbolize, and showcase magnetic behavior, often associated with an Irresistible personality alongside a thick air of authority. They exude a temperament of melancholy and calm, yet still being known for their quick reflexes and hurriedly nature. This makes the tiger a natural leader, suited to lead and influence in an optimistic way. Tigers have a lot of confidence, perhaps even too much. It’s best to not test a Tiger’s confidence, despite the fact that they adore adventures and are hooked on adrenaline. Instead of the other way around, they prefer to be obeyed.

But authority and adventure isn’t all that there is to a tiger’s personality. Tigers are also emotional and sensitive. Although they are capable of immense love, they sometimes overdo it. They tend to be possessive and territorial; thus they will defend what is rightfully theirs. This trait makes them noble and loyal when it comes to affection towards their loved ones. They excel in showing affection so well sometimes, that they forget to grasp the true meaning of moderation. (How cute?!)

There are many themes and lessons that we, as humans, can learn from the behavioral and ethical ways of tigers. They teach us honesty, logical and ethical decision making skills, leadership, compromise, generosity, and authority. They have lessons of confidence, love, adventure, emotionality, affection, and empathy to offer to us. Hence, it is not right that they, the tigers, lose their population and their rightful place on this planet as a result of our carelessness, our greed, our pleasure, and our conflicts. They deserve to be loved, protected, preserved, and let free. Our actions have caused major consequences for not only their race, but for organisms that depend on the tiger as well.

Nevertheless, it is not too late.

It is always better late than never. If enough actions and humanitarian deeds are performed for the sake of the tiger population, a (slight, if not any) improvement can most definitely be attained.

For the tiger never really did any wrong; only humans did.
